Thousands of sequins benefit fight against Issue 3
by John Freie
Cincinnati-"Night of a Thousand Sequins" will take place on Saturday, December 11 to benefit the fight against Cincinnati's anti-gay ordinance Issue 3 thanks to the Plum St. Pipeline and many local "divas."
Time is running out to raise funds for the campaign to repeal Issue 3 next November. Remember Issue 3, now Article XII of Cincinnati's city charter? It's the amendment that prevents gay citizens from receiving protection in the workplace, housing, and public accommodations.
Citizens to Restore Fairness was created last November (with the Stonewall Political Action Committee) when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Cincinnati's case, after striking down a similar measure in Colorado.
We have been hard at work ever since, raising money to conduct a public poll to gauge public opinion on the issue, to run an education campaign on the intolerance that the GLBT community faces on a daily basis in Cincinnati, to gather signatures to put the issue on the ballot for November 2000, and to ultimately restore the same equal rights for gay citizens that are enjoyed by all other citizens in the rest of the country.
Cincinnati is the only city whose charter says you can be fired, evicted, or refused service in public places due to your "real or perceived" sexual orientation, thanks to Cincinnati's anti-gay charter amendment.
As far as money goes for our fight, however, we have a long way to go. Any ideas to raise funds? We need your input! Many local drag performers have helped to organize two drag shows at the Pipeline (one was held November 27) to benefit our worthy and much-needed cause.
As a result, we will again put on “Night of

a Thousand Sequins" at the Plum St. Pipeline at 10 p.m. Saturday, December 11 (upstairs at "Flux"). Admission for both events is only $5 and all proceeds will go towards the Repeal Issue 3 Campaign.
Darrell Gill, owner of the Pipeline, has generously agreed to let us do the shows.
"Our community needs to come together to win this one," Gill said. For $5 you'll be dazzled and amused by divas such as Truly Scrumptious, who designed the fliers, organized the performers and who will also be the mistress of ceremonies; Viagra Falls, Mahogany (Miss Subway 1999) and a host of others while they'll "work the runway" for equality.
In the future, we'll plan more shows at local establishments and more "fun-draisers," so let's all help make these first two shows a
success.

Special credit for our fundraising shows also goes to Rick Snell, president of the Imperial Sovereign Queen City Court of the Buckeye Empire. He helped organize and recruit performers for the December 11 show. His help is greatly appreciated considering that the Court does at least 70 shows a year, most of which benefit AIDS-related charities.
This is not an "official" Court performance, which is why we appreciate their participation all the more. The Court is doing this solely to help raise funds to fight intolerance in Cincinnati. Also, these events would not have happened without the help of our mistress of ceremonies Miss Truly Scrumpfious.

one. We need your support now more than ever. Our opponents in the Issue 3 fight will, no doubt, have a lot more money to spend than our side does in their effort to make sure gay Cincinnatians remain second-class citi-
zens.
For five bucks you can support our cause, help the fight to end intolerance and enjoy a fabulous, hilarious drag show. What better way to take a break during the holiday hustle and bustle?
